TWGGS hockey has been enjoying a run of success in the opening weeks of this academic year, in a series of Kent Schools County Hockey tournaments. The new Year 7 U12 team came third in Kent, while the U14 achieved third place in their pool. Regional Tournaments beckon for both the U13 and U18 who came second and first respectively in their county tournaments. Well done to all the players and teachers involved. Here we have reports from the teams:
On the 28th of September, the Year 7 hockey team took part in an Under 12s tournament at Sevenoaks School finishing third overall. Our first match in the group stages started with a 3-0 victory over St Dunstan’s with our forward Tilly scoring all three goals for a hat-trick! In our second match, we played the home team, Sevenoaks school, winning 1-0, our right midfielder Bronagh coming away with an impressive goal. Then we played Ashford, a strong team with great offensive play, however, neither team could secure a goal finishing the match tied at 0-0.
In our last match of the group stages, we played the tough and skilful team of Kent College Pembury but we came up short in the end losing 2-0, although we had still secured our place in the next round. On to our next match, where we would play Kent College (the Canterbury team this time). We managed to win that match 1-0 with a goal from Tilly. In the semi-finals, we would yet again play Ashford; however this time, even with some great saves from our goalkeeper Isla, we were unlucky losing 1-0. However, we bounced back to win our third and fourth place play-off with a great team goal from a short corner. All players played amazingly well, and we all have gelled and loved being in the team for the few weeks we have been at TWGGS.

In the first match, TWGGS played Kings Canterbury. We played well in the first half, but then Canterbury came back with some nice goals. Two goals were scored in the first half (10 minutes) by both teams. After Kings Canterbury’s goal, our goal was scored by Milly Petrie with a spectacular slap into the far corner! Shortly after the second half was underway, Kings Canterbury took the lead with a nice goal only for TWGGS to equalise again with a nicely set up goal from the team scored by Anjalie Rohan. We finished with a great result of 2-2!
The second match was against Elton College. In the first half TWGGS scored 4 lovely goals. With lots of lovely combinations, we ended up with an excellent result of 5-0! Charlotte Wren came back with two of the goals, Anjalie Rohan came back with two and finally Milly Petrie with one. The first goal was a short corner with Charlotte Wren running in at post and deflecting it into the bottom left corner.
We played Kent College Pembury for our third match after a brief break. This was a tight match with both teams having some brilliant goal scoring opportunities. TWGGS got the early lead and managed to retain the lead finishing with a result of 1-0.
In our last group match, we played Ashford. After a long battle, the result ended as 1-1, meaning flicks would determine who went into the final! Three people stepped up. For TWGGS we had Charlotte Wren, Milly Petrie and Anjalie Rohan. TWGGS went through to the final with Anjalie Rohan scoring the winning flick.
For the final, our opposition was Sevenoaks School. The game stayed even until the second half. Sevenoaks scored a brilliant hit giving them the advantage. With multiple chances, TWGGS just couldn't make a breakthrough. In the end, TWGGS came second in the County Tournament and will be moving onto Regionals! Very pleased with our progress throughout the day, we came back with medals and can't wait for Regionals.
This Thursday the 19th of September, TWGGS’ Year 9 hockey team went to Sevenoaks School to take part in the Under 14 Kent County Hockey tournament. We came home third outside of the final and played some great hockey in the process. Our distribution and excellent passing was what led us to win our first game, and what motivated us to keep on playing as best as we could. We worked on positioning when passing/taking the ball in between matches such as square and back/forward passes, and getting into space. Although we did not win the tournament, we had lots of fun in the process and showed great sportsmanship and skill towards our opponents and each other.

After a minibus ride to Sevenoaks school, with great music keeping spirits high, the TWGGS XI hockey team was raring to go at the U18 Kent Hockey Tournament. With 3 games in our pool, we started off well, winning our first game against Ashford School before struggling against Sevenoaks but bringing it back to win in our final game. This meant that we had qualified for the semi-finals. A charged atmosphere going into the match, the team out-performed our opposition, St Edmunds and won 1:0, resulting in a well-earned and well-fought position in the final against Sevenoaks: a rematch! Following an invigorating pep talk from Mrs Scovell and our team captain, Izzy Giles, the team was energised, and stellar attacking combined with a strong defence meant that the team won the rematch 1:0, winning the competition and taking home the shield!
