International Women's Day

International Women's Day

18th Mar 2026

International Women's Day has come under fire in recent years; it has been criticised for feeling tokenistic with critics asking 'why do we have just one day to acknowledge women?' I am delighted to say that TWGGS is certainly not guilty of this oversight. Our Head Girl Team hosted a range of activities over several days to really embrace the significance of this international day, cultivating a sense of recognition and celebration throughout the whole school.

British Library trip for IWD

On Friday, 6th March Mrs Davis and Mr Tugby took 20 Lower Sixth pupils to the British Library for a day of activities to celebrate International Women's Day. They attended workshops and lectures, facilitated by academics and experts in their field. Pupils met with Dr Eleanor Careless who delivered an inspirational workshop on the pioneering British feminist magazine 'Spare Rib' which published 239 issues over a 21-year period in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In the afternoon the Sixth Form were treated to a lecture and workshop, delivered by Dr Polly Russell and Professor Margaretta Jolly, curators of  the exhibition 'Unfinished Business: The Fight for Women's Rights', which ran at the British Library throughout COVID.

Assemblies on IWD

The Head Girl Team and 3Cs Team delivered provocative assemblies on the theme of IWD to all years, encouraging them to contribute to our whole school Google form, asking Who Are The Women Who Inspire You? Pupils and staff responded to these questions en masse, sharing a range of responses from Michelle Obama, Lucy Bronze, Jodie Ounsly, Jacinda Arden, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, their friends and family. Overwhelmingly, pupils said their biggest role model was 'my mum'.

Tuesday 10th March - Legacy Day

We are coming up to almost five years of the Legacy Project, a whole school venture that tackles sexual harassment, misogyny, to bringing about authentic female empowerment. Aware of how much this aligns with the ethos of IWD, we enjoyed hosting a whole school Feminist Rave at lunchtime, bringing all years together to celebrate female power and unity. The Sixth Form also hosted an after-school workshop where pupils across both the Lower and Upper Sixth could come together to feel truly empowered. We were very lucky that local Wellness Coach, Emma, could also join us for this affirming event, sharing her unique journey of self-acceptance and healing.

No Makeup Day

Hot on the heels of these empowering events, the whole school was invited to go makeup free on Wednesday, 11th March! It was wonderful to see so many staff and pupils embrace this feminist moment!
