Tales From the Archive

4th Dec 2025

Just by the hall stands a water fountain, which was presented to the school by the Parent Teacher-Association, as it was then known. The inscription reads: 'T.W.C.G.S., Presented by the Parent-Teacher Association, Coronation, June 1953'. We have a wonderful photo of the fountain in use, presumably when it was first installed. Thank you to Ruby A and Isobel M who allowed us to interrupt their day for a recreation! We also have some other photos which were displayed at the TWGGS Old Girls' Reunion in the summer: we can compare a side-view of the school in the 1920s to a recent photograph, and the old Sixth Form block before the construction of the Hazell Building, which Mr Walker remembers well! A view of our fête and flower show at Trinity Church, with attendees enjoying the sunshine.

Our school hall looks much the same, with the hymn board hanging in the very same spot. We also have a brochure of the 'Schedule of Exhibits' for a flower show from 1953, with the entries for the flower and vegetable competitions. We were intrigued by the 'Posy in an egg-cup' category, and the limit of 'six sprays' in a vase of sweet peas! The archives are a rich seam of information, including all our school magazines and annual reports and accounts for the Parent-Teacher Association. Here we have the minutes pamphlet from the Sixth Annual General Meeting, from 1949 to 1950, including their accounts, and also from the twelfth meeting, 1955 to 1956. This is just a small selection of the documents and photographs we have showing the history of our community. We hope you enjoy these images from the past.
