ESU Debating and Public Speaking Competitions

ESU Debating and Public Speaking Competitions

4th Dec 2025

TWGGS pupils have taken part in two of the most prestigious competitions organised by the English-Speaking Union this month. We hosted Round One of the regional heats for the Schools’ Mace Debating Competition on November 24th, which saw six local schools take opposing sides on a range of topical issues. Three members of TWGGS’ Lower Sixth, Josie, Lola and Elisa argued a powerful case on the future of short-haul flights in the UK against Mayfield School. The ESU Competition Lead praised the team for their impressive research and passionate delivery.

On November 26th, three of our Year 11 pupils took part in an online heat of the ESU’s Churchill Public Speaking Competition. While our nominated Speaker, Grace, delivered a convincing presentation on the impact of social media on the wellbeing of young people, the TWGGS’ Chair and Questioner hosted a powerful session on the 'power of silence' in politics and current affairs. We are delighted that the combined effort and strong teamwork shown by TWGGS means that we are through to Round Two of the Churchill Competition in the New Year!

The three judges of the Public Speaking Competition praised TWGGS for 'commanding their presentation right from the start with a warm but authoritative manner' and for emerging as the 'most consistent and effective overall team of the evening'. Congratulations to both of our TWGGS’ ESU teams! It has been great to see confident communication in action throughout both competitions this term!
