Four lucky pupils went to Walthamstow Hall on 18th May to attend a CSI Science Challenge Workshop. The renowned scientist and medical expert Professor Robert Winston helped to lead the event, which was part of Wally Hall’s Science Week. The interactive, hands-on morning allowed pupils to explore fascinating scientific ideas linked to IVF, genetics, forensic analysis and bioethics. Pupils worked in teams to complete a series of practical challenges designed to develop their problem-solving, critical thinking and collaborative investigation skills. Throughout the morning, they rotated through a range of science-based challenges which included DNA and genetics practical tasks, microscopy and cell analysis, ethical decision-making discussions and forensic-style laboratory activities.
Highlights included a mock debate, set in the House of Lords, chaired by Professor Winston, focusing on the banning of genetic changes to embryos. Our pupils put forward strong arguments for and against. This was followed by a concluding talk by Professor Winston covering the early days of IVF research and the importance of collaboration and ethics in science.
