Holly's English Literature Oxford Success

15th Jul 2025

Sixth Form pupil Holly has recently received two prestigious accolades from the University of Oxford in recognition of her work in English Literature.

St Edmund Hall 'Big Think Competition'

Every year, St Edmund Hall invites students across the UK to tackle one of their academics’ ‘big’ questions. These are designed to challenge pupils beyond the school curriculum and get them thinking ‘big’ about their subject and what it might be like to study it at university. They were asked to record a video of five minutes or less presenting their arguments, research, evidence and opinions.

Holly was selected as the Subject Winner for English, responding to the question, 'What can literature and/or the other arts do that so-called “AI” probably never will?'. Dr Tom MacFaul, English tutor at St Edmund's, was thoroughly impressed by her submission, giving the following feedback:

"Your video is very engagingly and wittily presented. Its argument is strong, raising important issues. ... I admire the intellectual honesty in not wanting to come to a glib conclusion."

Holly received a £35 reward from the college, and has had her video essay to their YouTube playlist of winners, and was invited to the prize winner's day on Monday 30th June.

Lincoln College, Oxford, English Literature Summer Course

Holly has also been successful in her application to the Lincoln College, Oxford, English Literature study summer course, where she will spend three days in the college accommodation in August. Congratulations Holly!
