Our Year 10 and Lower Sixth pupils recently enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Design Museum in London, where they explored the exciting relationship between design, sustainability, and architecture.
Both year groups had the opportunity to explore the museum independently and experience its current exhibitions. The displays provided a wealth of inspiration, exposing pupils to contemporary design, architecture, fashion, and product design. Exploring the exhibitions enabled pupils to gather ideas, analyse the work of professional designers, and make meaningful connections to their own NEA projects.
The Year 10 pupils took part in an engaging sustainability workshop, where they investigated how designers are responding to environmental challenges through innovative and responsible design. The session encouraged pupils to think critically about the impact of design decisions and consider how sustainability can shape the future.
Meanwhile, our Lower Sixth pupils demonstrated excellent initiative by conducting an interview with a long-standing member of the Design Museum staff. They gained fascinating insight into the museum's architecture, exploring the history of the building, its transformation into the Design Museum, and the key architectural features that make it such an iconic space. This first-hand experience provided valuable context to support their studies and deepen their understanding of architectural design.
Unfortunately, our return journey was disrupted when our coach's air conditioning broke down, resulting in an unexpected wait for a replacement bus. Despite the challenging circumstances, both year groups were a real credit to the school. Their maturity, positivity, patience, and community spirit were evident throughout, as they supported one another and remained cheerful and respectful while waiting. Their exemplary behaviour reflected the values of Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School, and we were incredibly proud of the way they handled the situation.
Overall, the visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom, and their enthusiasm, curiosity, resilience, and outstanding conduct made the day a great success.
