ThinkMaths: Year 9 Discovers the Surprising World of Mathematics

24th Jun 2026

Year 9 pupils recently enjoyed an exciting visit from a guest speaker who delivered two engaging and interactive sessions, demonstrating that mathematics is far more than numbers on a page. The first presentation, Shapes and Smoke Rings, introduced pupils to the fascinating field of topology – a branch of mathematics that explores the properties of shapes that remain unchanged when stretched, twisted or deformed. Through a series of hands-on demonstrations and thought-provoking challenges, pupils explored concepts including linking puzzles, Möbius loops, spherical geometry and fluid dynamics. The highlight for many was seeing real smoke rings in action, bringing complex mathematical ideas to life in a memorable and visually impressive way.

In the second session, The Hidden Maths of Technology, pupils discovered how mathematics underpins many of the technologies they use every day. Through a range of interactive demonstrations and mathematical 'magic' tricks, they explored how barcodes are checked for accuracy, how text messages can be recovered when data is lost, how computers represent information using binary numbers, and how digital images are created and stored. The session revealed the often unseen role that mathematics plays in modern life and highlighted the wide range of careers that rely on mathematical thinking.

Both presentations challenged pupils to think differently about mathematics, encouraging curiosity, problem-solving and creativity. By connecting mathematical concepts to real-world applications, the sessions demonstrated how maths shapes the world around us and plays a vital role in technological innovation. The presentations were thoroughly enjoyed by pupils (and staff) and provided a valuable opportunity to experience mathematics in a new and inspiring way.
