Our Easter Assembly was an opportunity for the whole school community to offer a huge vote of thanks to our outgoing Head Girl Team, Senior Prefects and 3Cs Leaders for their incredible contributions to school life this year, before welcoming their newly elected counterparts to the stage for the very first time. We are very much looking forward to working alongside the new team from September as they take up their roles.
A very special part of this annual handover of responsibility is the presentation of Prefect Brooches, which has a history dating back to the earliest days of the school. When it was founded in 1905, the school was allocated the daisy, as an emblem, and this has played a part in the school ever since. For the golden jubilee in 1955, each pupil was given an enamel daisy brooch. Then, at the school’s centenary in 2005, we asked the original jeweller to produce an updated version, for every pupil, member of staff, governor and old girl who visited TWGGS that year. More recently, Mrs Marchant and Mrs Wybar decided jointly that these would make ideal prefects badges, which all outgoing pupil leaders are able to keep as a memento of their service to TWGGS. The Deputy and Head Girl brooches are the original prefects’ badges for the school, made from sterling silver and are gifted to the team to wear for their year of service. To bring the traditions right up to date, each member of the Key Stage 4 3Cs leadership team receives a rectangular brooch in the TWGGS’ colours of blue and gold, recognising their commitment to our shared values of community, challenge and character.
