Medical Mavericks came to school to run workshops for Year 10 on 'Careers in Medicine' last week. We were delighted to welcome Mr Agudelo-Munoz who set up a range of activities for our pupils to take part in including using an ultrasound machine to scan radius and ulna bones to search for growth plates, and using an iPhone retina scan where they could see their optic discs and blood vessels less than 1mm in diameter. The pupils also got to record and print an ECG, printing off their own Electrocardiogram! There was a tricky process using a fake arm to extract blood, and one of the most popular activities was keyhole surgery, where laparoscopic instruments were used to complete simple tasks, such as threading string whilst viewing their actions through a tablet camera. Finally, an infrared vein scanner allowed them to project an image of their veins onto their skin by scanning them with infrared light. The enthusiasm and energy levels were high, and we hope they enjoyed their sessions!
