Cambridge Choral Evensong at Christ’s College

On Thursday, 12th March, Ms Ives and our Senior Joint Choir (with Skinners’ School) travelled to Cambridge for an exceptional day of music-making. We arrived at midday to be met by James, the second-year organ scholar at Emmanuel College (affectionately known as ‘Emma’). We were given a wonderful and informative tour of the College and were able to ask lots of questions about life as a Cambridge student. We were then joined by one of Emma’s choral directors, who put our choir through their paces with an intense and highly professional choral workshop. They rose to the challenge magnificently and impressed everyone.

Next, we walked to Trinity College and were privileged to have their magnificent Chapel set aside for 45 minutes of singing to enjoy its fabulous setting and acoustics. After this, we were given an interesting and informative talk by the Admissions Department on applications, before being treated to a welcome cup of tea and biscuits, kindly provided by the College.

The joint choir then joined forces with the choir of Christ’s College in their gorgeous, intimate chapel for an hour-long rehearsal for Choral Evensong with Professor David Rowland. This beautiful and traditional service was sung by candlelight and it was a joy and privilege to see our pupils singing such glorious music to such an incredibly high standard in this most amazing of settings. Throughout the whole day, the TWGGS pupils were wonderful ambassadors for our fabulous school, and I could not have been prouder of them. The Evensong was attended by the prestigious English composer and choral director Grayston Ives, who was full of praise and admiration for our young choir.

Music Success!

Huge congratulations to Clara Z-F (11W) who entered the highly prestigious Brighton Festival, which celebrates its 60th year this year. Despite only being in Year 11, Clara entered the ‘Senior Recital – Any Age’ and ‘Concerto’ categories, playing Jeux by Ibert, two movements from the E Major Concerto by Bach, and the Nielsen Flute Concerto. I am delighted to say that Clara won both categories and was highly praised by the judges. This is an exceptional accomplishment for such a young pupil in a national competition, and we are thrilled for her.
