We celebrated last year's Year 11 and Upper Sixth at our Speech Day yesterday. It was wonderful to see so many who have moved to pastures new and who came back to see us. As always it is such a joyous occasion, and it's an opportunity to look back on an important year, and to look forward to the future. We heard from Mrs Robinson, the Chair of Governors; the Senior Choir gave us a superb rendition of 'Everywhere' by Fleetwood Mac; the Dance of the Knights was played beautifully by our Senior Strings and, after the distribution of awards, TWGGS Old Girl Eleanor Hennebry gave a fantastic address with sage wisdom and inspiring advice: 'Be inspired by those around you, be encouraged by them and encourage them in return, because the women sitting next to you in this hall are exceptional, as are you.' Our current Head Girl, Saskia W, gave the Vote of Thanks before we sang the School Song, followed by a reception in the LWT where we were fortunate to have a good catch-up with last year's Upper Sixth. It was a truly wonderful occasion and we thank all who attended, despite the terrible weather. We leave you with the poem from Mrs Marchant's address, 'Up-Hill' by Christina Rosetti, a poem about choosing the right path for you, wherever life takes you.
Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the day’s journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend. But is there for the night a resting-place? A roof for when the slow dark hours begin. May not the darkness hide it from my face? You cannot miss that inn. Shall I meet other wayfarers at night? Those who have gone before. Then must I knock, or call when just in sight? They will not keep you standing at that door. Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak? Of labour you shall find the sum. Will there be beds for me and all who seek? Yea, beds for all who come.
We wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy new year.
