Last summer term, Year 7 pupils studying the origins of Empire explored the history and legacy of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, particularly in relation to the Sikh Prince, Duleep Singh. The classroom discussion was so thoughtful and engaged that many pupils chose to write to King Charles III, sharing a range of their own critical perspectives on this contested piece of imperial heritage. The Palace responded to thank them for their 'splendid letters'. His Majesty wanted the pupils to know that he greatly appreciated the tremendous care and thought they had demonstrated in composing their messages, and that he was very interested to hear their perspectives on this significant historical issue. It's a testament to the quality of historical thinking happening in our classrooms. Young people engaged rigorously with complex questions about empire, heritage, and legacy, and were recognised for doing so. This exchange exemplifies the three Cs we value at TWGGS: the Character they showed in their drive to engage with these questions and share their own critical voices; the Community spirit of contributing to wider debate on contested heritage; and the Challenge of thinking deeply about history's relevance to our world today. Our Year 8s should be very proud.
