Wellbeing

Learning how to adapt to adversity is essential to our health and happiness, and helping our pupils stay happy and healthy is a priority here at Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School. Pupils engage in a series of short, fortnightly resilience and mindfulness activities they carry out in form time and at home. These aim to encourage pupils to reflect on how they approach their problems, encourage them to think more about their responses to challenges and obstacles, and build greater resilience in the face of life's ups and downs.

We also run a ten week mindfulness course at lunchtimes for pupils who would benefit from learning ways to ease their anxiety and refocus their thoughts during times of stress.

Peer Support

This year, as part of our drive to promote wellbeing at TWGGS, eighteen Upper and Lower Sixth pupils have volunteered their time, energy and enthusiasm to be Peer Supporters to our Year 8s. Using material and guidance from the well-established Peer Education Project, the Sixth Formers have so far undergone 5 hours of training to prepare them for the responsibility of leading two twenty minutes sessions in Y8 form time for five weeks after the half-term. After this, the idea is for them to offer one-to-one meetings with any pupils who could benefit from the time and ear of an older peer.

Sessions include activities based around various mental health challenges that arise in young people and strategies of coping. Our team have given up their free time to essentially be tested and pushed out of their comfort zone, all the while with characteristic TWGGS spirit and focus. It is my pleasure to work alongside them: they are a real credit to our school.

Nicola Morgan, The Teenage Brain Woman

We were delighted that so many parents/carers could join us online on 24th January 2023 for a very informative talk given by Nicola Morgan, otherwise known as 'The Teenage Brain Woman'.

As reported in our school newsletter, the prize-winning endeavours of three of our pupils won this very informative session for our school community. A huge number of households joined the Google meet and, for those unable to join live last night, Nicola has very kindly made her resources available to us for a limited time. Please follow the link below to the folder of materials, including a recording of Nicola's talk:
