Modern Foreign Languages

With the impetus of globalisation, we believe that it is more important than ever before to communicate effectively in languages other than English.

We are proud that modern languages are a major component of TWGGS’ Secondary School curriculum and offer the students a comprehensive series of valuable experiences covering the major areas of learning. Pupils who learn a foreign language are stretched intellectually, their horizons are widened and they are able to broaden their knowledge and experience, giving them a sense of achievement and personal satisfaction.

At KS3 girls at TWGGS study three languages: German, French and Spanish.

Spanish and German are studied in Y7 and French is added in Y8. They continue all three languages until the end of Y9, thus offering them a greater choice of language options at GCSE.

Pupils learn to understand, speak, read and write accurately and are introduced to the culture and way of life in the French, German and Spanish speaking countries. Girls develop their language skills through a variety of teaching techniques which provide a solid basis for their future studies of the language(s) of their choice.

The MFL department subscribes every year to Linguascope, a language website, which has proved very popular amongst the girls to do extension work at home.

The library is equipped with Graded Readers for MFL learners.

MFL Activities

Every year Gifted and Talented linguists in Year 8 are invited to take part in the “Languages Day” at the University of Canterbury which encourages them to pursue their interest and love for languages.
