Drama

Drama at TWGGS has a thriving extra-curricular life. There are two Drama Clubs for Key Stage 3 pupils, which also offer older girls the chance to lead and direct activities. Those taking Bronze and Silver Arts Awards can opt to have a Drama focus, and will be supported by the Drama teachers. Activities in school are complemented by theatre visits.

The Year 8 Shakespeare Festival and Year 9 Drama Festival take place in February and July respectively. These annual events utilise the skills, talent and enthusiasm of the whole year group, taking responsibility for all aspects of performance and production. Pupils work collaboratively, taking the play allocated to their form group from page to stage. Over the course of three weeks, they work in their English and Drama lessons on all aspects of performance, making costumes, sourcing props, building set, directing, acting, technical design and producing promotional material. Parents and staff are invited to watch the pupils’ work in an evening performance, where they hear the guest adjudicator’s feedback awarding prizes for acting and back-stage production.

Professional workshops, led by experienced practitioners and current theatre companies, provide enrichment for examination classes outside of the usual classroom environment, enabling pupils to achieve outstanding results for performance at both GCSE and A level.

The biennial whole school production alternates between a large cast musical, working together with the Music department, and non-musical plays.
