We believe that Mathematics at TWGGS should, above all, be enjoyable. We wish to stimulate interest in, and enthusiasm for, the study of mathematics for its own sake so that pupils discover for themselves the richness and variety of the subject and the unique insight it provides into the nature of the world around them.

We are committed to the fostering of this positive attitude to the subject while developing the maths skills required for adult life, for other subjects and for the passing of examinations. While pupils naturally have a range of abilities and interests, we offer them the opportunity to achieve their full potential in the subject at an appropriate level and rate of progress.

Key Stage 3 Mathematics

The Year 7 and 8 Maths syllabus uses the Collins Frameworking textbooks and covers a variety of topics which are intended to start the development of skills and knowledge necessary for success at GCSE.

Year 7

Pupils are taught in form groups throughout Year 7.

Number – work with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, proportion and sequences.

Algebra – work in this topic aims to give a firm foundation in standard techniques, including simplifying expressions, expanding brackets, solving equations and drawing graphs.

Shape and Space – this area of the curriculum includes perimeter, area, volume, angles, symmetry, circles and transformations.

Probability and Statistics – pupils will be expected to calculate simple theoretical and experimental probabilities with singles and combined events, as well as developing skills which will allow them to interpret and compare data effectively using various graphs, charts and numerical techniques.

Year 8

In Year 8, the pupils are taught in five divisions: A1 and A2; and three divisions of equal ability, which we describe as B groups.

Throughout Year 8, pupils develop skills and knowledge in the four curriculum areas studied in Year 7, progressing them towards the level required for GCSE Maths.

Year 9

From Year 9, pupils study the GCSE Maths syllabus.  There are 3 A sets created based on Key Stage 3 performance, with two parallel B groups.

Please see the Maths Key Stage 4 section for details of the GCSE curriculum.

GCSE Mathematics

Edexcel specification for GCSE Mathematics GCSE Mathematics is now a three-year course that starts at the beginning of Year 9. It is divided into two tiers of entry; all five sets are entered for the higher tier with all examinations being taken at the end of Year 11. There are three examination papers, the first of which is a non-calculator paper, followed by two calculator papers. There is no coursework or controlled assessment for GCSE Mathematics.

The KS4 curriculum builds on the work covered at KS3 when the GCSE programme started. The course is designed to develop thinking skills to solve mathematical problems, which is promoted in the new curriculum, and tested in the three GCSE papers. Provision is made for gifted and talented maths pupils in set A1, who also follow the AQA Further Maths Level 2 programme. Success at GCSE usually means there is a considerable amount of interest in studying Mathematics at A Level.

A Level Mathematics

Edexcel specification for A Level Mathematics

Mathematics and Further Mathematics are versatile qualifications, well-respected by employers and are both ‘facilitating’ subjects for entry to higher education. Careers for those with good mathematics skills and qualifications are not only well paid, but they are also often interesting and rewarding. People who have studied mathematics are in the fortunate position of having an excellent choice of career. Whilst the number of young people studying A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics is increasing there is still a huge demand from science, engineering and manufacturing employers.

The reason why so many employers highly value mathematics qualifications is mathematics students become better at thinking logically and analytically. Through solving problems, you develop resilience and are able to think creatively and strategically. The writing of structured solutions, proof and justification of results help you to formulate reasoned arguments; importantly you will have excellent numeracy skills and the ability to process and interpret data.

For progression to many courses at university it is vital to have strong mathematics skills. For most science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree courses, A level Mathematics is a requirement, and AS or A level Further Mathematics is often preferred. Anyone applying to study a degree in a STEM subject should consider taking Further Mathematics to at least AS level as the additional content helps ensure a successful progression to university. AS Further Mathematics is accessible to most A level Mathematics students. Having A level Further Mathematics on your university application is a way to make it stand out. The mathematical skills you learn in A level Mathematics are of great benefit in other A level subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, computing, geography, psychology, economics and business studies.
